Why the slow version is worth it

A modern multi-blade cartridge yanks at the hair and skips moisturisation. A heritage shave does the opposite: warm water and steamed towels open the follicle, oil glides the blade, and a single sharp edge passes once with the grain and once against. The skin is calmer when you walk out than when you walked in.

Every shave at Northcliff is performed with a fresh-loaded straight razor — one blade, one client. The towels come out of an industrial steamer, the lather is whipped fresh in a ceramic mug, and the finish includes both witch hazel and our house balm.

The seven stages

A forty-minute breakdown

Recline

The chair drops back. Music down. You don’t need to chat.

Cleanse

Warm water and gentle face wash to lift surface oils.

Pre-shave oil

A few drops massaged in to coat each hair shaft for an easy glide.

First towel

Steaming hot, draped for three full minutes. Follicles open.

Lather & pass

Whipped lather, single-blade pass with the grain.

Second towel & pass

Re-lather, pass against the grain for the closest finish.

Witch hazel & balm

Witch hazel calms the skin, balm seals it. You sit up. Done.

Will a straight razor irritate sensitive skin?

Done properly, a single-blade shave is gentler than a multi-blade cartridge because it passes the skin once instead of three or four times. Tell your barber if you have known sensitivities and we’ll switch to a fragrance-free lather and balm.

Can I do this if I’ve never had a straight razor shave before?

Of course — most of our shave regulars started exactly the same way. Your barber will walk you through every step and stop at any point if you need a break.

How often is too often?

Once a week is the sweet spot for most clients. Every day risks irritation; once a month means the prep work loses its compounding benefits on the skin.

Should I shave at home before coming in?

Please don’t — 2–3 days of growth is ideal. Shorter than that and the razor can’t catch enough hair to glide properly.
